Do you know any "American" Food?

I am in America and am a bit amazed at the dearth of restaurants that flaunt 'authentic' American food/american classics. in other places i've bn to, pple sell local cuisine. Please do recommend some recipes if you know any of "American" food. im in TX and all i see is Tex-Mex (wc is great by the way) and or Mxcn with italian, and some other general eating places- nothing full-fledged American. i will be gutted if i leave without having any. will be in Dallas and then Austin. Please dont suggest McD's.
