Why does my dog smell?

I have a cocker spainel that is 5 years old and is very active, playfull and healthy. I recently shaved his fur back for the summer so he would be cooler with a thinner coat, but now his skin and or fur does not smell good. He did not smell bad before we shaved him - why now and how do i stop it?
